Create a Newspaper

Your assignment is to choose a year American history between 1960 and 1985 and "build" a newspaper around it. To make your newspaper authentic, you will have to do research on your topic and on what America was like at this time. Include the name of your newspaper, headings, pictures, color, photographs, and anything else you think will make your project better. The articles, pictures, etc. should be attached to a poster board to make a visual aid that you will share with the class. This project will also be done in Microsoft Word, landscape orientation, with at least 14 pages. Utilize the drawing toolbar with lines, textboxes, etc…

  1. Front Page headlines - A news article that treats the chosen event as a newly breaking story. This article must include a lead (an opening paragraph of thirty words or less that tells who, what, where, when, why) and supporting paragraphs that give factual information about the event. It should be approximately 30 words long.
  2. Movie review article. Watch a movie from (not about!) the period and review it for your newspaper. Be sure to state the title, performers, producer, and date of your movie. Then briefly summarize it, describe American life as it is shown in the film, and tell why you did/didn't like it.
  3. Story about a sports figure or event from the period. What sports did he/she play? What were their statistics? Records broken? Information about Personal life.
  4. Three Original political cartoons about an event. Explain what the cartoon means.
  5. Fashion page. What were the styles of the period? Include pictures and your own text.
  6. Original and accurate advertisement for a new product of the time. How much was this product at that time? Include a picture.
  7. Original and accurate TV page with "highlights" and reviews. Name three shows that were popular at the time? What were they like? Watch one of these shows and review it, if possible.
  8. Weather report: from your chosen time period. Include a pictures, forecast, temperatures, etc...
  9. Food guide. Write your own food column. What kinds of recipes were popular at that time? What kind of equipment existed (or didn't exist!) for food preparation?
  10. Music report. What was the most popular song in that day? Who was the most popular singer or singing groups?
  11. Technology column. Find out what kind of technology was used from the time period to get an idea of the types of problems people had at that time.
  12. Real estate/classified/help wanted section. Create original advertisements. What were homes like in the Houston area at the time of your chosen event? How are they different from those of today? What kinds of jobs did people have? How was the employment scene different then than it is today?
  13. Another article of your choice. Please make sure that I approve your idea before you start work.
  14.  Finally, you need a closing editorial that discusses the importance of a technology event in that day. Why do you think this event is important? How did it affect America and the world when it happened? How did it affect future events in American history? This should be written from today's point of view, and should be about 50 words long. Don't forget to use "we" instead of "I" when you give your opinions. (It is acceptable to do this in editorials.)
